Renaming Views afte Changes in Enterprise Global

Hello all. We're running Project Server 2003 and Project Pro 2003. Can
anyone explain why Views which are edited in the Enterprise Global do not
overwrite the corresponding view in an existing project?

For example. I save a project which just happens to be displaying the Gantt
View when it's saved (saved to the server not locally). I go into
Enterprise Global and make some changes to the Gantt View. The next time I
open my project I get this message saying that there is an existing Gantt
View which can not be overwritten, and that I either have to rename my view
(the Gantt View in my project) or cancel opening the project.

Why is the existing Gantt View read-only, why can't it be overwritten with
the Enterprise Global Version of the view?

What really gets me is, if I have some other view (not the Gantt View)
visible at the time I saved the project, and I go through the same process
(edit the Gantt View in Enterprise Global), there's no problem. When I open
the project and switch to the Gantt View, it has the changes that were made
in Enterprise Global.

So, the general rule seems to be, if the view that was visible at the time
the project was saved, is edited in Enterprise Global, the next time you
open that project you will have to save your existing view under a new name.
Otherwise, the next time you switch to the edited view you will get the
changes, no questions asked.

Why no "Overwrite existing view with Enterprise Global version." option?

Thanks.

Project Server can only overwrite Views that are not currently displayed.
By default, most users have the Gantt Chart view displayed most of the time,
thus, the system will not overwrite it with a custom Gantt Chart view you
created in the Enterprise Global.

Your problem is being caused by the fact that you are attempting to use
nonenterprise Views in the Enterprise Global, which includes the Gantt Chart
view. Because you have added this View to the Enterprise Global, you are
causing your users untold grief with the constant appearance of warning
dialogs every time they open a project Instead, I strongly recommend that
you edit the Enterprise Gantt Chart and create other enterprise Views that
use a different naming convention from nonenterprise Views, such as the
Gantt Chart or Resource Sheet views. Once you have edited the Enterprise
Gantt Chart view, you will need to teach your people to use this View. Your
organization could even make it a training/performance issue and mandate
that people use this View in their projects. In addition, I would urge you
to consider creating a special enterprise version of the Tracking Gantt view
that could be used by people in your organization to track progress (or the
lack of it) in your organization. Again, do not merely modify the standard
Tracking Gantt view, as you will create the problems for your users all over
again. Instead, copy the Tracking Gantt view and then modify it, including
giving it a unique name.

Our company uses a standard naming convention for all custom objects in the
Enterprise Global. Our convention is to prefix all object names with the
"_msPE" nickname, such as "_msPE Tracking Gantt", so that users can easily
distinguish custom enterprise objects from local objects. Hope these ideas
help.
