Rendering document with data graphics from external data

I note with interest the data graphics feature in Visio 2007.
However, the obvious application I'd put this to seems to remain
unaddressed: starting with a stored Visio document, how would I, on
server-side and without user interaction, apply dynamic, external data to
shape custom values and generate an updated (browser viewable) image?

(Mapping data to shapes and their fields isn't trivial, of course, and would
probably require a programmatic API. My data doesn't come directly from a DB,
so a simple SQL column mapping wouldn't be enough.)

I would love to be able to let my customers use a familiar tool to build
custom representations of their systems and plug my data it for visualization
purposes, but that will require a solution to the above - and preferrably
with Java libraries available as well as the usual.
