Um, yes, but just finished reading Saturday morning papers to coax myself
into wakefulness.

Looking through your eloquent answer again, I've re-read Kwong221's
original, near-impenetrable post. It seems that s/he may have mentioned a
table of contents only as a side remark about why s/he used headings.
Goodness knows, really; and I'm not sure what "header [i.e., 'heading']
mode" and "'renumber' in the lightening button" refer to.
But over all, I think it's a numbering problem that's being reported.
Specifically, maybe re-numbering, i.e. re-starting a numbering sequence --
or maybe establishing a hierarchy of numbering such as "1.1" for heading 2
and "1.1.1" for heading 3. There's a possible clue here ("Could this be
happening because the original document with the heading styles was created
in a PC version of word?"). Certainly, numbering problems are known to occur
when a document is transferred from another computer, non?
So here's my response: Kwong221, take a bit more time and effort to ask your
question again. Then we can answer properly. And tell us the version of
Word, please. ;-)
And in the meantime:
"Bend Word to Your Will" is downloadable from
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html
See "Avoiding broken numbering sequences" on page 123 and the two numbering
articles starting on page 148.
The most robust, reliable method (with minimum potential for corruption,
which is why I use it when I'm forced to use automatic numbering) is very
well explained at
www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html
But if you do not do it exactly the way Shauna describes, it won't work.

re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best or complete solution
is provided; sometimes you'll be asked for further information. Good tips
about getting the best out of posting are at

blank page and have to hit the circular arrow icon -- "Reload the current
