Repair a Database

The forms are linked to tables held in another mdb. The
user has been using the system without any problems but
within the past 4 weeks the user has been given the
following message: "The database 'location of the mdb'
needs to be repaired or isn't a database file. Do you
want Microsoft Access to attempt to repair the database?"
If you select Yes the system will repair the database but
when you then go into one specific table and try to sort
one of the column the error message "Unrecognized database
format 'location of the mdb'" appears. The table has a
column which has a data type of AutoNumber and when the
table is opened the numbers are out of sink and show
28557, 28558, 28559 as the top three records when the
numbers go from 899 to 28631. Can anyone tell me why the
database keeps falling over. Is it a problem with the
database and coding within or is it a problem caused by
the system that the database is been run on?
