Repair docx

R

Roy

I have a docx file which is damaged. I don't know how it happend, but the
original file as well as the backup won't open.

"Microsoft Office can't open this file because certain parts are missing or
invalid" (translated from Dutch to English, so original error in English
might be different).

I need the contents / text of this file badly because of a law-suite. So I
hope there are people with suggestions to help me out... Or willing to help
me recover the contents (I can send the file if needed).

Thanks in advance!

Sorry Roy, but without at least knowing what version of Word you're using it
would basically be a shot in the dark to offer any suggestions. Also - since
the "@discussions..." implies - you may be on a Windows system rather than a
Mac but you've wound up in the Mac Word news group. If that's the case go to
this page & use one of the Win Word groups for more direction:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/FlyoutOverview.mspx

If you do happen to be using a Mac post back here with more details.

Have you tried the "Recover Text from Any File" choice in the Open
dialog?

I don't know if that will work with a docx file, but it did work for me
on a plain doc file.

Cheers,
Jon

Hi Jonathan:

Yes, that works in a .docx just as it does in a .doc, and I agree, that's
the customer's best option :)

Cheers

Docx files are nothing more than zip archives.

Try to rename the file to *.zip and unzip the archive from Finder (open
with...). It should contain several XML files like this:
p4fe961bb:~/Desktop juergenfenn$ unzip test.zip
Archive: test.zip
inflating: [Content_Types].xml
inflating: _rels/.rels
inflating: word/_rels/document.xml.rels
inflating: word/document.xml
inflating: word/theme/theme1.xml
extracting: docProps/thumbnail.jpeg
inflating: word/settings.xml
inflating: word/webSettings.xml
inflating: word/styles.xml
inflating: docProps/core.xml
inflating: word/numbering.xml
inflating: word/fontTable.xml
inflating: docProps/app.xml
p4fe961bb:~/Desktop juergenfenn$

Your text (together with some other tags) is in document.xml.

Regards,
Jürgen.

Hi,

I think you can try a utility called Advanced Word Repair to repair
your Word document. It works rather well for my corrupt Word
documents. Its web address is http://www.datanumen.com/awr/ I'm not
sure whether it works well for Word 2007 docx files, but you may try
if there is no better choice.

If anyone DOES do try the spyware being peddled by this brain-dead little
cretin, you will discover that it won't even install on a Mac.

Given that he doesn't know that, how much confidence would you have in the
rest of his software? Would YOU trust a man who can't tell the difference
between a Mac and a PC with your system? I wouldn't :)

The message below & others like it referring to a product called "Advanced
Word Repair" are nothing but an advertisement for a product which doesn't
even exist for Mac OS.

By his own admission "Alan" isn't even "sure whether it works well for Word
2007 docx files". If it doesn't work for .docx on the PC it won't work for
..docx on the Mac even if a Mac version were available. Further, if the
vendor isn't sure I doubt anyone else should even try - Notice that the
sender's address is the same domain as the URL referenced in the post.

I, personally, would have no dealings with any company as irresponsible,
indiscriminant, & inappropriate as DataNumen, Inc. appears to be.

Thought I'd throw this out.
Supposedly this problem is caused by some type of defect in Mozilla
products using wrong type and creator code. I also understood that
FireFox 3 was supposed to cure the problem.

Well yesterday Mozilla Just released FireFox3. I've Tried it on a
another Drive with X.4.11 installed. I must say its wicked fast and
they have added some new feature. IF MS takes a look at it, they are
supposed to be working on IE8 they will be sick to their stomachs,
because it is so fast.

But in any event, it may fix this problem from happening in the first
place.
