Repair Outlook 2003 after uninstalling 2007

I installed Outlook 2007 Beta 2 and had alot of crashes, so I uninstalled it.
Reinstalled Outlook 2003 but cannot start and get error message: "Cannot
start Microsoft Office Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the wrong version.
This could have been caused by installing other message software. Please
reinstall Outlook."

I have tried to reinstall it several times to no avail! The current file
version of the MAPI32.dll is 1.0.2536.0 (XPClient.010817-1148), Product
version 5.1.2600.0. I have also tried running the "fixmapi" application
several times and it doesn't help either.

Does anyone know what version of MAPI32.dll I should have installed and
where I can download a copy of it? Any help would be appreciated as I am
unable to start Outlook 2003 at all.

What kind of crashes did you have in 2007? Just a guess, did it crash
whenever you hit new, reply, opened an email? If yes, then you have
Adobe Acrobat Pro 6/7 installed (not the reader) and you'd have to
remove its Outlook & Office plugins via control panel, add/Remove
programs, Change Adobe Acrobat Pro.

Let me just make sure I clearly understand what you did:
- you installed 2007. Did you leave Office 2003 on the machine or
upgraded it?
- then you removed 2007
- then you reinstalled 2003?

Have you already tried removing 2003 and reinstalling it?

If the above crash was your problem, you could also just reinstall
2007...

the best thing to do is a system restore then reinstall or repair office
2003.

Patrick,

Sounds like you may have encounter this problem too. Yes, it did crash
whenever I hit "relpy." I can't say for sure if it also crashed when I hit
new because I wasn't going beyond the problem of "reply" crashes at the time.
Your assumption was correct in that I do have Adobe Acrobat Pro 6 installed.
I followed your excellent directions on how to remove its Outlook & Office
Plug ins. I reinstalled Office Pro 2003 and still could not start Outlook.
Still getting the same message re: MAPI32.DLL. I then reinstalled Office
2007 Beta 2 and Outlook 2007 Beta 2 started right up.

I still haven't figured out why I can't go back to Outlook 2003, so that
particular problem isn't solved but at least I can use Outlook 2007 for now
until I find the answer.

If you are interested, here is the sequence of events that occured:

1. Installed Office 2007 Beta 2. Selected Upgrade option.
2. Outlook kept crashing whenever "reply" was hit. Sent error notification
to MS each time.
3. Office 2007 automatically detected the problem and performed a
diagnostic test to try to determine the cause.
4. Office 2007 did recommend that the Adobe plug-ins were incompatible but
I didn't remove them at that time. It also reported that it detected Office
2003 was still active and was conflicting with the Beta.
5. I uninstalled Office 2003.
6. I uninstalled Office 2007 Beta 2.
7. I reinstalled Office 2003 and from that point could not start Outlook
2003.
8. I followed the suggestion you gave above.
9. Reinstalled Office 2003 (once again!). Still got MAPI32.DLL error msg.
10. Reinstalled Office 2007 Beta 2. Outlook 2007 up and running for the
time being.

I will continue to test this but am concerned that I cannot go back to
Outlook 2003 at this time.

Thanks for taking the time to write your suggestions. At least I now have a
"work around" until I get it resolved.

Diane,

Thanks for taking the time to help. I tried to restore and also to
reinstall Office 2003 numerous times with no success. Patrick's suggestion
helped to get me back up and running with Outlook 2007 Beta 2. Please see my
reply to his thread.

I had problems with Outlook 2007 and pulled it off my machine. I had the
same problems as you with the MAPI error after uninstalling Outlook, I ended
up just taking Office 2003 off my computer and re-installing it and the error
was gone.

Simple answer: You can't. There can only be one version of Outlook
installed on a computer at any time (this is the case for all versions
of Outlook). So if you have 2007 running, 2003 is never going to work.
For Outlook, you need to make a choice which one you want.
If you are interested, here is the sequence of events that occured:

1. Installed Office 2007 Beta 2. Selected Upgrade option.
2. Outlook kept crashing whenever "reply" was hit. Sent error notification

10. Reinstalled Office 2007 Beta 2. Outlook 2007 up and running for the
time being.
Your sequence was off. In order to be able to use Office 2003 (except
Outlook 2003) with Office 2007, you need to install 2003 first, then
2007. Same for uninstall: Latest one you installed (2007) needs to be
removed before 2003. That way you can avoid most problems.
I will continue to test this but am concerned that I cannot go back to
Outlook 2003 at this time.
As I said before, you have to pick either Outlook 2003 or Outlook 2007.
It's either or, but never both.
If you want Outlook 2003, then uninstall 2007, uninstall 2003, reinstall
2003 and reinstall 2007 without Outlook.
