Repeat table cell if table spans 2 pages

I'm already using repeat headers for the first row of the table, but when I
have rows that span 2 pages I'd like to repeat the left hand cell, which
identifies the information for that row, on each following page. Curently the
second page has a blank left hand cell as the text that identifes the date in
that row is on the preceding page.

Is Word spreading the table horizontally across the spread, or are you
creating two tables with same-height rows? I suspect the latter.

Word doesn't have a concept of (what the Chicago Manual calls) stub
columns; you can simply copy the cells of your first stub column
(leave out the header cell), select the cells they're to fill on the
second page, and paste them. (It might decide to put them in a new
column, just delete the empty column.)

That’s not what’s happening. Say you create a table that has 2 rows and 2
columns. The top 2 cells are labeled “type of data†and “data†and you’ve
this row to appear at the top of every page. In the bottom left cell you
place the text “places to eat†and the bottom right cell you place the names
of restaurants. The problem is that you’re listing so many restaurants that
the row expands and spans across 2 pages with the restaurants appearing on
both pages. The left cell will only appear on the first page and not the
second as a result of all the text, but I’m looking for a way to have that
text appear on both pages.

Aha -- the table isn't expanding horizontally, it's expanding
vertically, and simply going to a new page when it fills up the first
page. Word doesn't know that the 21st through 40th (say) rows are
equivalents of the 1st through 20th rows -- it just knows that when it
breaks to a new page, it should repeat the header row(s). So if you
really want a table with (say) 20 rows and a zillion columns, you're
really making a multi-page table with a zillion-divided-by-20 pages,
and you'll have to repeat the content of the first 20 stub cells. But
you can do this automatically by selecting the entire stub column and
Pasting just once. (If the last page has fewer than 20 rows, it'll
fill in that many of the cells with the first part of the pasted
cells.)

But note that if you have only one cell with the names of restaurants,
and the _cell_ goes onto the second page, you'll nver get anything to
the left of it, because you haven't started a new row.
