Repeated Crash/Auto Recovery of Word 2003

J

Jed

Running Word 2003 with Windows XP Pro. Am getting constant
cases of a message stating that Word has a problem and
must restart. Auto Recovery brings back the document. The
event monitor's information (I'll paste it below) doesn't
show up anywhere in the Knowledge Base. So far I can't
correlate it to any other applications or any settings in
Word.

Here's the event:

Faulting application winword.exe, version 11.0.6359.0,
stamp 40c8b025, faulting module winword.exe, version
11.0.6359.0, stamp 40c8b025, debug? 0, fault address
0x0007bfe7.

Hi Jed - Yes I also wrote to a support group at Microsoft and I got this
email and it works!! Read on... Beth

The file format is the same for Word 97 - 2003. However Word 2003
opens files a little differently and we've had reports of similar
issues. But so far Word 2003 has been able to repair the errors
contained in the older document.

Try going to the File/Open dialog, selecting the document, and under
the Open drop down select "Open and Repair".

All of the above, it does not matter what you are doing. I could be
creating a new document, editing a older document, or be in Outlook 2003
creating a new email and it crashes and goes into recovery mode. This just
started happening recently so I am convinced that its a patch, but which
one. I have a small network (approx 100 users) so all of my patching is
automated (except for Office patches) with HFNetChk Pro and SUS.

If you don't have any means of narrowing the issue down then try using
Word in Safe Mode and see if the error continues to occur. To start
Word in Safe Mode, hold Ctrl while starting the application.

Also, since you have been encountering a lot of crashes then if you
haven't cleaned up your temp files then that is something you should
do:

Delete all temp (*.tmp) files:
- Exit Word and Outlook if you are using it as your email editor and
reboot your computer if you recently experienced a crash
- Go to Start/Find/Files or Folders (or Start/Search then select Files
or Folders)
- Change "Look in" to reflect the drive/folder to the root of your
Local drive.
- In the Named text box, type *.tmp
- Click the "Find Now" command
- Delete the temp files you find.

*Note that these can be deleted directly from the Find Results.

To group the files for a single deletion:
- Click any file in the list
- Press <Ctrl A> to select all

Should you encounter a "File in use" error, press <Ctrl> and click the
file to deselect it.

As an additional note, the Owner file is another temporary files Word
creates. If you have been experiencing multiple crashes or if Word has
been hanging on you then it is best to search for Owner files
(~$*.do?) and delete those as well. These can cause "file in use" and
"read only" errors.

For more information on this and a full cleanup/maintenance procedure
that should be run periodically, see this article:
