repeated words in successive pages and unusual large spaces

I've been writing a thesis using MS Word of Office XP.
The thesis has a large number of pages and a huge number
of very long footnotes.
I've been plagued by two problems:
1 - The last two or three words of some pages, not always
the same pages or the same words, are sometimes repeated
in the next page.
2 - The space between the last paragraphs of some pages
is unusually large although nothing can be noticed in the
print preview feature.
I'm using an hp deskjet 5550 printer with the last hp
driver for Win XP
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Clarification for the previous message:
The problems i've been plagued with appear when I print
my work. The repetitions or increased spaces are not
visible in normal or layoout print views neither in print
preview.
