Repeating emails

Hi I need someone's help please. Whenever I do a send receive it receives
emails repeatedly from days previous, sometimes 2 or 3 times the same email.
Giving me 2-3 hundred emails everytime a send receive is done or I sign in.

How do I stop this from happening?

Is this a pop mail account?
Perhaps you have configured your mail account to leave a copy on the server,
if so do you require this?
