Replace is wonky. Tells me something I'm staring at "can't befound."

Is this a known issue? (Word 2004)

I have several phrases that are in quotes throughout a report, and I need to
change them to italics without quotes.

I¹ve been searching for them and making the changes, but now Find/Replace
does not see them.

I solved one problem by inserting the curly quotes manually into the Find
field. But nothing I do will make Find ³see² the remaining one.

I have copied the whole item and pasted it into the Find field, just to be
sure it wasn¹t some typo of mine...
No good.

I have been tracking changes and having them appear during editing, which
seemed to cause a bit of trouble. Find was locating the deleted items as
well as the inserted ones.

Another odd problem is that I could not search for a quote mark and delete
it by leaving the Replace field blank. That has always worked in previous
versions of Word. This time I had to replace the quote with a space. Is that
expected behavior.

I¹ve been going through doing it all manually, which is a colossal waste of
time and energy. Hope you may have a suggestion.

Best,

Hi Bill,

You could try if the macro from
http://www.word.mvps.org/faqs/macrosvba/ReplaceQuotes.htm works for you.

But I'm not sure it would work, since I'm also not sure why doing it
manually failed for you.

Maybe it's "Track changes", but it doesn't seem too likely. Seems more
probable that there is something weird about your quotes.

Select one and open the "Insert > Symbol" dialog. Perhaps you see something
weird about the font or the code? Smart quotes in English should be Unicode
characters 201C and 201D.

Replacing something with nothing should work fine, too. If you haven't
figured out the problem in the meantime, you could mail me a sample doc
privately. I only have PC Word, and Mac Office X, so if it's a problem
peculiar to Word 2004, I can't help.

Regards,
Klaus

I do appreciate your taking the trouble to answer, Klaus.

I was not able to fix it and did not know the command to check the unicode.
Used to know it in Word 5 (key combo involving Q as I recall).

Since I have already got rid of them, I don't think sending you the file
will help.

I was rather surprised no one even answered. I feel better now.

Thanks again.

Best,

- Bill
