Replace numbered outline items with "worded" outline items?

Hi-

I would like to implement outline numbering in MS Word using words to index
sections instead of numbers. For example, the following outline is easy to
do in MS Word:

1. Item 1 heading
1.1. Item 1.1 heading
1.2. Item 1.2 heading
2. Item 2 heading

I would like the following outline instead:

Item1. Item 1 heading
Item1.Subitem1. Item 1, subitem 1 heading
Item1.Subitem2. Item 1, subitem 2 heading
Item2. Item 2 heading

(No connection between heading tags line "Item1" and the heading text that
follows it)

I would pick the words that substitute for the numbers when a new level is
created. The index words would persist at that level and heading scope.

My goal is to make a more meaningful connection between the heading ID and
the text contained within the heading. It's a simple concept. I wonder how
easy it would be to implement. Does anyone know how to do that in MS Word?
Otherwise, does anyone know of any add-in utility that will do it?

Thanks, John

Hi Freetext.usenetserver.com,

I'm not sure I understand what you want, but assuming I do...

Select a gallery preset. click Customize.

In this dialog box you can select each level from the list down the left. In
the box at the top you can type text before or after the number for the level.
This will be applied when that numbering level is applied.

If you need to "fiddle" and experiment, you should do so in a "throw-away"
document, as you'll probably end up creating numerous "List templates". An
accumulation of list templates will cause, at best, file bloat and at worst
corrupt files.
