Replaced pop e-mail account with IMAP

I currently have Outlook 2007 installed on a Windows business Vista 64
computer and have set up my e-mail to work in Internet mail mode utilizing a
pop account.

I am purchasing an iPhone and have read that it will synchronize everything
in Outlook except the e-mail contents of the inbox and sent items folder.
While their knowledgebase states that I can use the pop e-mail account in the
iPhone, it states that the only way to synchronize the inbox and sent items
folders between the iPhone and Outlook is by using IMAP. [Actually they say
that this can also be done using Microsoft exchange server and Mobilme,
neither of which I have]

I see in the Outlook help section that I can set up an e-mail account using
IMAP. Before I do this I would like to know the answers to a couple of
questions:

1. Do I also have to have my e-mail service provider change my account to an
IMAP?

2. After creating an IMAP email account in outlook can I simply copy over
all of the e-mail contents of my inbox and sent items folder to it from the
pop email account?

3. If I copy over all of my e-mail contents to my new IMAP e-mail account
will they then be available on the IMAP server for synchronization with my
iPhone?

4. Can I continue to back up my Outlook utilizing Vista backup and restore
to protect the contents of the IMAP email account?

Before you do anything, visit Apple's iPhone forum for Mail, Calendar and
Contact issues at http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1144 and
find out if IMAP is the best option or if there are better ways. Just
because it works with exchange doesn't mean it will work the same with imap.
You may want/need the mobileme service.

1. No. They either support it or not. You will need to find out if they
support it and what the server names are - most ISPs have this information
on their support pages.

2. Yes.

3. Yes.

4. Yes, but imap is a server account so the contents of the IMAP account are
stored on the server.

Good idea, it seems as though if you do not want to pay for mobileme with
all of its bells and whistles, IMAP is the favored option, which I am told,
requires no special software or exchange to keep e-mail synchronized on
multiple devices.

Are there any limitations, for example size of the inbox and sent items
folder, to using an IMAP e-mail account as opposed to a pop account or as far
as the user is concerned do they appear identical?

stored on the server.

Why the but? Their e-mail server can crash, as it has done once before, and
if I don't manage my own backups, I could lose some data!?
