Replacement format replaces all text in document

Hey,

If this has been already asked for, I appologize. I have looked
everywhere but was not successful.
I have moved from XP/Office 2003 to OS-X 10.4.1/Office 2004 and have
been having a problem with Word -
When I select *any* text in my document (that is 25 pps and was created
in XP/ Office 2003), the format for the entire document is replaced.
For example, if I change font on one word from size 12 to size 8, the
entire document is changed to size 8. When I select "undo", it takes
about 1 minute and it reverts to the previous format except for the
chosen word that is in the new format (size 8 in the example above).
Sometimes, it takes more than 5 minutes until I force quit the
application.

Does anyone know a way to fix/remedy this? It is extremely annoying
considering I am still on the first page of the 25 page document after
one hour of editing...

Thanks,
Alex

I believe this is probably because your style(s) is/are set up to update
automatically. This means that if you change the formatting of text,
Word updates the style so that formatting is applied to all instances of
that style. For example, if your entire document is in Normal style, and
you change some of it to 8 pt type, the whole thing will follow. I don't
use this feature myself, but that's more or less how I understand it
works.

To check, choose Style from Format, select the style you are using for
the text that has shown this behavior, click Modify, and in the Modify
Style box that comes up, note a checkbox labeled Automatically update.
I'm betting it's checked. Uncheck it and this behavior will stop.

Or I could be completely wrong!
