Replacing a resource

Is there a way to 'globally' replace a resouce? For example, if I have resource "Ted" assigned to 2000 tasks, and i want them all to be replaced with resource "Jim", is there a one step solution or do I have to manually reassign each task? Thanks in advance.

Hi Shawn,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Yes. Filter the Gantt view for tasks (Project/Filtered For ()/Using
Resource... and select all the tasks. Then click the Assign resources
button on the Standard toolbar (the double headed icon) and in the Assign
Resources dialog select the leaving resource and click the Replace... button
and chose your new resource.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on:)

Even easier is to go to the Resource Sheet view and just change the name
there.

Yes, but don't do that if you are using a resource pool unless you want
every project to be changed!

What if the original resource is still one the project but there are a
number of tasks he was on that will now be done by someone else?

Find and Replace and select where you want to replace. That wasn't the
original question.

The question was how to globally replace one resource with another -
changing the resource name is a kludge that doesn't really do that -
you'd have to change all the supporting details, calendar, pay rates,
email addy perhaps, etc as well, and then have to recreate the original
entry if he again returns to the project in the future. Filtering for
resource A, selecting all tasks, and using the assign resource dialog
box Replace button works best. It also has the advantage of allowing
you to substitute a resource in midstream while preserving any work
already done by the original resource. Filter for uncompleted tasks
done by resource A and use the assign dialog to replace with B. Now any
actual work that was done by A will still be shown as being done by him
but any work that had been assigned to A that didn't have an actual
associated with it will be switched to B.
