replacing letters

is it possible to replace a letter, say the word boy to the word girl
in my whole document by not highlighting every single boy in order to
change to girl?

is there any short cut which can just replace the word for the whole
document?

Go to Edit>Replace. In this example, enter the word "boy" in the find field,
the word "girl" in the replace field, then click on "Replace All".

When you do, you may want to click the button in the lower left corner of
the dialog box to expand it and check the box for 'Find whole words only' -
otherwise any occurrence of what you are searching for will be replaced
(e.g., hautboy will be changed to hautgirl).

If you _do_ check that box, however, words such as boyish *won't* be changed
to girlish unless you also check the 'Find all word forms' box. With the
check it may be a good idea to just click Find (rather than Replace All) so
you can Replace on a selective basis.

Edit menu -> Replace -> type "boy" in the "Find what?" field and "girl" in
the "Replace with" field -> hit the "Replace all" button.

* A SUGGESTION -- WAIT FOR CONSIDERED ADVICE: If you post a question, keep
re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best or complete solution
is proposed; sometimes you'll be asked for further information so that a
better answer can be provided. Good tips about getting the best out of
posting are at http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm (if you use Safari
you may see a blank page and have to hit the circular arrow icon -- "Reload
the current page" -- a few times).
