Replacing Microsoft 2004 with 2008

Hello, I already have Microsoft 2004 on my computer and I just bought Office 2008. When I put 2008 on my computer, I should obviously delete 2004 but when I do remove it are all my existing documents from 2004 going to be deleted?

And if so, how should I go about doing this?

At this stage, I would suggest not deleting 2004 at all. but if you do,
I'd also suggest make sure you keep any templates you have created
somewhere other than in their location in 2004. Set 'em aside for
safekeeping, and add them later.

2008 is not quite ready for prime time IMO.

But if i leave 2004 and have 2008 isn't that wasting space? and will it slow down my computer?

I strongly suggest that you do NOT delete Office 2004 from your computer.
You are going to need it.

The whole of Office 2004 takes up about 520 MB on disk. If you don't have
that much disk to spare, you should consider buying a larger disk SOON!

No, it won't slow your computer down unless you are running all of them
simultaneously. For example, if you are using Word 2008 and need a function
that it doesn't have, quit it, before starting Word 2004.

Applications do not slow the computer down if they are not being used.

Computers that have run out of disk space get very slow: but if 500 MB is
going to make the difference, it's time to add a new disk :) Do a Get Info
on your Hard Disk Drive. If it's more than about 70 per cent full, time to
think about upgrading :)

Cheers

Just to answer your original question (since no one else did :), no, your
documents will not be touched if you do choose to remove Office 2004; they
are stored so they're external to the application itself.

As for whether or not to keep Office 2004 at all, I say "it depends". If
you do heavy-duty word processing, then keep it around for now. If you're
in OS 10.5.2, *definitely* keep it around. But ...

If you're still in OS 10.4.x and you don't intend to upgrade until Apple
gets OS 10.5 right *and* if you're a relatively casual word processing
person (and don't use VBA), you'll be just fine with Office 2008. I know
that I am myself! I'm still in OS 10.4 and I have not needed to back up to
Office 2004 at all. I only keep it around for reference (so I can answer
questions about it on this group :).

Hi Libby -

Just one little qualification to reinforce Beth's practical advice: It
depends on *where* you have your documents stored... as long as they are not
stored in locations such as the Microsoft Office 2004 - or other locations
where they really shouldn't be in the first place - Remove Office won't harm
them.
