Hi,
I've been having a problem replying to HTML emails that contain invalid
image tags. When word as email editor is turned on and I click reply to such
an email Outlook stops responding. The reply button remains highlighted and
Outlook is rendered totally unusable until the OUTLOOK.EXE and WINWORD.EXE
processes are stopped through Task Manager and Outlook is restarted.
Disabling the virus scanner does not make a difference. The problem occurs
on multiple computers.
The following workarounds allow the reply function to work, but have
significant impact on end user experience.
1. Turing off Word as the email editor.
2. Turning on "Read all standard mail as plain text".
3. Editing the email and removing the invalid picture reference.
An example of a HTML tag that stops replies from working is:
<IMG id=_x0000_i1025 height=261
src="mhtml:mid://00000320/!cid:[email protected]" width=430>
I've tested two emails that were identical except for that IMG tag. The one
without the tag worked on hitting the reply button and the one with the tag
didn't work on hitting the reply button.
All machines experiencing the problem are running Win XP Pro SP 2 with
Office Pro 2003 SP 2 and connect to an Exchange Standard 2003 SP 2. All with
patches applied. Their are no 3rd party add-ins on the machines affected.
