report performance issue

I have a report which link to a query.

It takes 10 seconds to run the query, but it takes 2 minutes to
complete the report.

There is no coding on the report. The report just simple text box to
the query fields.

Are there any over head to running report then query?

I thought that the time to run the report and query should not be so
big difference.

Any suggestions to look the problem is appreciated,

It's quite common to build a query that returns the raw values, then base a
report on it that formats the values for printed output.

How are you "completing the report"? Are you including the time to print
it, or merely to display it in print preview mode?

What do you mean by "format the value when I print it out"?

Are you doing that in the report definition?

(I don't have any first-hand experience with this kind of slow-down, so I'll
suggest that you search on-line with some of the related terms.)

I have PLENTY of first-hand experience with this kind of slow-down.

Simple reports that just group and display - no built-in formulas, no
totalling - "hang" for loooong periods before displaying. Also often give
spurious errors "the field is too small to accept the amount of data you
attempted to add. Try inserting or pasting less data" and refuse to run."
The latter occurs when there are memo fields in the source data - setting
field attribute to "can expand" does not help.

Never happened before "upgrade" to 2007.


This happens so frequently that I gave up on the report editor and generate
my own html reports with VB.
