Report run and design very slow

J

Jim D.

I have an Access 2000 SR-1 application with a report that has a subreport
(includes a chart). When I first open the application file (.mdb), and
design this report it usually opens within a few seconds. However, after
working in the application for a few minutes, I try to design the same
report, it takes 4 minutes to open. The report always takes 4 minutes to
open in Preview mode on the Win 98 development machine (.mdb or .mde), but
against the same db file on a Win XP Pro machine, the report opens in Preview
in just a few seconds.

Looking at the System Monitor, when the report is opening in design veiw,
the CPU % is maxed out; Available Physical memory drops lower and lower to
around 30 to 100 mb; Page-ins goes up to around 850. There seems to be very
little disk activity based on the disk access light.

The application file is large, about 15mb (freshly compacted) with quite a
few objects: 215 queries, 85 reports, 65 forms, 46 modules (mostly class
modules). The tables are stored in a separate file (.mdb) and the application
file links to around 85 tables. The app also uses about 4 third party 4
Active X controls as well as ADO, DAO, MS Common dialog, MS Scripting, MS
Forms 2.0, MS Ole, VBA, Access, etc. This app has grown over 7 years and has
been upgraded from Access 2.0 to Access 97 to 2K. We always backup the app
file and if there is ever a crash during development we restore the backup.

Machine configuration: Access 2000 SR-1, Windows 98 SE, Pentium 4 2.5ghz,
256mb RAM run as a virtual machine guest using either VMWare or MS Virtual PC
on a Win XP Pro host (Pentium 4 2.5ghz, 520mb RAM).

I recently purchase SpySweeper and cleaned the host machine and guest
machine of spyware/adware, but that didn't make any difference. Norton
Anti-virus 2004 is installed on the host.

Any ideas would really be appreciated.

Hi,

Thanks for using MSDN Managed Newsgroup!

From your descriptions, I understood that your second time opening that
report will take you four minutes in Windows XP and each time your opening
that report in WIndows 98 will last four minutes. Have I understood you? If
there is anything I misunderstood, please feel free to let me know.

First of all, I hate to say but this kind of issue is very hard for us
troubleshooting in the newsgroup. Looking at the nature of this issue, it
would require intensive troubleshooting which would be done quickly and
effectively with direct assistance from a Microsoft Support Professional
through Microsoft Product Support Services. You can contact Microsoft
Product Support directly to discuss additional support options you may have
available, by contacting us at 1-(800)936-5800 or by choosing one of the
options listed at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=sz;en-us;top.

Secondly, Would you like to answer the following questions for me?
1. When did you find this behavior? Any modification was made before or
after that?

2. Is it possitble for you to export that report and subreport, including
chart into another mdb file, will it be better for opening? If not, could
you send that small sample file to me? I could be reached at
(e-mail address removed) (Please remove online, it's only for SPAM)

3. If all report will take such a long time for opening?

4. Have you upgraded to the latest services pack, such as Jet 4.0 Service
Pack 8?

Thank you for your patience and cooperation. If you have any questions or
concerns, don't hesitate to let me know. We are here to be of assistance!

Sincerely yours,

Hi,

Have you tried the steps I provided to you? Normally, you should export
report and its related into a new mdb file separately, try to see which one
made the performance issue.

Anyway, I wanted to post a quick note to see if you would like additional
assistance or information regarding this particular issue. We appreciate
your patience and look forward to hearing from you!

Thank you for your patience and cooperation. If you have any questions or
