Repository other than file system

Hi!

I would like to edit/save directly from word/excel, documents stored on a
custom application server or database, like it is possible to edit/save
directly from a sharepoint document library. How can I do this?
Is there a specific webService interface that office applications can talk
with?
Can someone please give me some hints?
