Repost: FP can no longer find my local webs

If I'm posting this to the wrong newsgroup, please could someone advise me
as to a better one?

I'm using FP 2000 and IIS 5.1 with Win XP. My local webs (http://localhost/)
are mapped to C:\Inetpub\wwwroot. Everything's been working fine until
recently.

On Dec 24 I tried to open one of my local webs in FP, (e.g. by using File +
Open Web, and double-clicking on "localhost" in the Open dialog; but I get
the same problem if I type the full path, e.g. http://localhost/davesweb/),
and I get a message saying "Documents in this folder are not available. The
folder may have been moved or deleted, or network problems may be preventing
a connection to the server." The message is nonsense because the folder is
on my C: drive and in fact FP can open it fine if I go to it via my C: drive
rather than via "Localhost" (but I need to be able to go to it via
localhost).

In IE, all my local webs (e.g. http://localhost/davesweb/) load fine - they
just don't load in FrontPage.

In IIS, if I click "Default Web Site in the explorer pane and right-click
Properties, then the path shown under "Local Path" on the "Home Directory"
tab is shown correctly as c:\inetpub\wwwroot.

If (and I suspect this is the key) I open (for example)
http://localhost/davesweb/ in IE and select File + Edit with Microsoft
FrontPage, I get a message: "Server error: Cannot open "frontpg.lck"; no
such file or folder.".

When I then click OK, the individual web page opens in FP (and even displays
correctly, which means it must somehow be picking up its linked css file
alright), but the website doesn't load (so in Folders view in FP, nothing is
displayed).

What's going on, and how can I fix it?

Dave

You need to go into IIS and check / repair the FrontPage extensions.

Hi Steve

I've opened IIS but can't see "check / repair the FrontPage extensions" on
the menus. How do I get to it?

Dave

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > click the plus
by Internet Information Services, click the plus by Web Sites, right click
on Default Web Site.
Scroll to All Tasks and select "Check Server Extensions."
