Request for Guidance (non-IU MOPP 2007 clients, MOPS 2007 IU setup

Here is my situation:
- I have direct input over how and when the Project Server 2007 (and WSS
3.0) instances are upgraded with the Infrastructure Update.
- I do NOT have direct input over how and when the individual project
managers upgrade their desktop Project Professional 2007 installations with
the Infrastructure Update. The best contribution I can make is an annoying
e-mail reminder to all Project Managers defined within PWA.

I came across one warning posted by Microsoft that the desktop and server
need to both be running the same version (either both IU or both non-IU) in
order to avoid data corruption issues.

Does anyone have direct experience with a heterogenous user base including
both MOPP 2007 desktop clients with the IU and MOPP 2007 desktop clients
without the IU, given a MOPS 2007 w/IU server environment? If so, have you
experienced any major data corruption issues or minor inconvenience factors?
In my operating environment it is often the case that one PM will create and
publish a project but then change the project owner to a different PM. It is
possible that PM1 had the infrastructure update applied to his or her desktop
software while PM2 did not.

I am pleased with how the desktop and server IU versions behave in my test
environment and want to include the IU for both WSS 3.0 and MOPS 2007 in some
upcoming server maintenance on my production machines. However, I am
concerned because my Project Manager user base will include mostly non-IU
MOPP 2007 users that will apply the desktop IU at their own convenience.

Any guidance, suggestions, or feedback is much appreciated. I would like to
upgrade the server components without a severe concern of creating data
consistency issues for my users who are slower in the desktop software update
process.

Thanks,
Gina Montgomery

Gina:

I think your best interests would be served by forcing the update somehow.
Pick a date and make everyone upgrade. I doubt that there are many people
out there flying against best practices on this. I understand the challenge
that this creates in certain environments. One strategy you might persue is
to provide an alternate TS or Citrix access for the slow pokes in
transition.
