require a password to open or modify a file

In Get Info, permissions may be set to prevent unauthorised modifications (thus, read only) but where is the command to create a password to open a file, or, alternatively to keep it closed till you enter the correct password. Word allows this in my PC. (Tools/Options/Security)

See the help topic " Use passwords to help protect documents"

Note: The protection is nowhere near as strong on the Mac: the document is
not encrypted, so a knowledgeable user can get through it quite easily.

Cheers

It's just a "semantic difference" of the OS - Options on that PC are the
equivalent of Preferences on the Mac... use;

Word> Preferences> Security

You can also set the password "on the fly" through the Save As dialog box by
clicking the Options button there.

Microsoft may not be responsible for dropping the line when I am downloading Word 12.1.0 but if other electronics suppliers can keep track of how much a customer has downloaded when the line drops and reconnect without starting the download anew, why can't Microsoft do the same ? Of at least offer a CD at a reasonable price ?
I was downloaded Word 12.1.0 from 10AM to 6PM and had it about 50% downloaded when the line dropped. On reconnection, the download started from zero again. That problem isn't likely to make friends for Microsoft.

Yeah: That really annoys me too.

Over on the dark side, Microsoft uses a "Download Manager" that will
re-start a failed download without losing data. Multiple times, if
necessary.

I must add it to my list of things to yell at them about.

They already have it on Windows, they can bring it over to the Mac :)

And "no" it's not Microsoft dropping the line on you, it's your ISP. Eight
hours is a classic "Maximum session time-out" that ISPs implement to prevent
companies staying dialled up all day :)

As I said in my other post, start the download sometime around 8 p.m. At
night and it should complete before they kick you off in the morning.

Cheers
