Requiring printer to use envelope

P

Phil Raidt

I am trying to print envelopes from Access. My boss insists that there is
some way to generically tell the printer to use an envelope, either by
pulling it from the envelope tray or telling the operator to insert one. I
have not been able to do this with the Access Report function. I can use
mail merge to print an envelope in Word from Access using VBA, but I don't
know how to get my printer to require an envelope. Any information would be
appreciated, including a definitive statement that it is not possible.
Thanks.

(FWIW we used to get around this problem using window envelopes, but they
are more expensive and you have to get the address aligned properly).

In essence in Word you would typically create a merge containing an envelope
/and/ the accompanying letter. The envelope is in a section on its own, and
in Word Page |Setup you specify where Word should get the paper for each
section.

Worth trying. However, it doesn't always work & seems to depend sometimes on
the printer driver.

Thanks for your response.

Are you saying that if I set up a combined document (letter and envelope)
the printer might use or ask for an envelope where appropriate?

I'm starting to think I may have to configure this on each user machine and
its printer. Does this seem to be the case?

Yes. FWIW "theory" only goes so far when it comes to hardware/software etc.
i.e. for any given combination of hardware/firmware/software, the only thing
that actually leads to a solution is an iteration of the following, until
(in an ideal world of course) you arrive at a cost-effective solution:
a. thought
b. experiment
c. evaluation of results

In your case, it seems to me that the most basic question is "even with a
one-page document, do any of the settings in Word|Page Setup force the
printer to feed something from the envelope feeder rather than (say) a sheet
of A4 paper?"

if the answer is "no", you could for example
a. see if anything /outside/ Word forces feeding from the envelope tray in
a useful way
b. if not, contact the printer manufacturer for support

....and so on...

Wish it were otherwise...
