Reset Picture Wreaks Havoc

I have to tell you, I absolutely HATE what has happened
to graphics in Word 2002. I used to merrily go along
pasting screenshots, opening the Word Picture Editor,
adding callouts, arrows, etc., and all with great east.
Then comes 2002. What in the world was MS thinking?

First of all, you can't even get to the Picture Editor
without retrieving the command from the toolbar editor.

OK, ok. Rant over. I am just so-o-o frustrated. I have
work to do and I spend an inordinate amount of time
trying to harness the graphics in 2002.

Here's my current problem. I paste a screenshot. I
click the Word Picture button (bottom from the toolbar
editor). The Word Picture Editor opens (at least, that's
what I think it is). I add a text box. I add a
callout. I notice that the boundaries of the picture
need to be reset. I click that snake-bitten button and
everything goes haywire. The boundaries either scroll
way off to the right of window, become tiny, scroll down
to the bottom ... there's no rhyme or reason to it.
Bottom line, I've got one now that when I close the
Picture Editor and go back to the document the picture is
invisible. I can select it and still see the selection
handles, but it's wearing an invisibility cloak.

Any clues? Also, I would be very grateful for any tips
on harnessing graphics in 2002 for Word 97/2000 users.

Thanks

And another thing, I've got one where I click Reset
Picture and the darn thing slides off to the right edge
of the page so that only half of it shows up when I click
Close Picture. It has a Layout setting of "In Front of
Text."
