I have been trying to fix this problem for the last hour and have given
up trying to figure it out. Whenever I type in a number it is
automatically converted to scientific notation. I have tried fooling
with just about every button and option I can find, but so far the only
thing I can find that works is typing the data in word and copying and
pasting or using the calculator otherwise the number will not show as
typed. Sorry. I realize that this is really entry level stuff, but it's
really been bugging me and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this happening in a *specific* worksheet or in *all* worksheets, all
workbooks?

It sounds like Scientific formatting - Select one of the offending cells,
then take a look @Format>Cells - Number. If necessary select something other
than Scientific, such as General, Number or Currency.

If it's happening in all (even new) workbooks there is something more at
play... Post back with more info including XL version.
