Resetting numbered list using right click

Ok, this should be a breeze for you MVPs ;)

1. I make a numbered list (1,2,3).
2. I then write another paragraph in say body text style.
3. I then start a second list (4,5,6,7...). Obviously this will start of
numbering from where the previous one left off. (Why this is default
behaviour eludes me).
4. I place the cursor at the start of the first item in the second list,
right-click and select Restart Numbering.
--> The SECOND item in the second list is reset to the number 1 (so the
second list becomes 4,1,2,3...). Interestingly this does not always happen.
Sometimes things look just fine. I have no idea what I do differently.

What am I doing wrong? Where should I insert the restart?

Regards,

John

Thanks guys!

Good articles, both of them. However I´m perplexed. I´m using the most basic
kind of list and it´s based on a paragraph format. It´s just 1,2,3... It´s
not nested, not multi-level, nothing complex at all. I´m using the worlds
most well known piece of software with a billion users. VBA, field codes, etc
is all very cool but it would be really nice if there was a simpler solution.
I just want to restart numbering.

Margaret Aldis' article
(http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/ListRestartMethods.htm) mentions the
"out of the box" solution using right-click and "restart numbering". It´s
just that this does not seem to work (without a whole lot of copying and
pasting every time). I still suspect there is a way of using this feature and
getting that restart on the firts item rather than the second. After all that
must be the whole point. Is there no simple work-around?

Sorry about the frustrated tone by the way. But, well, you all know what
it´s like ;)

Brilliant, Stefan!

I took a second look at that article, and it turns out my document is
perfect for the suggested solution (using a higher level list format) because
EVERY list in the manual is preceded by the same heading format!

To anyone following this thread here´s the short version of the solution
that worked for me:

Suppose you have a list, and it is preceded by a heading:

HEADING (in a paragraph format)
1. An item (in your original list paragraph format)
2. A second item
3. A third item.

Take the style format of your HEADING and make it a level 1 list style using
the Bullet and numbering > multi-level list dialog. You might also want to
remove numbering from this level. Make sure you associate this level with the
HEADING style. In the same dialog, define the second level, and associate it
with your original list style. Fiddle a bit with the settings a violá! Its
really solid! Once the styles are properly defined, your lists will get the
correct numbering without any further work.

If your lists are all full of hard restart markers (ie if you previously
used the right-click-and-restart-numbering-method - which does not work) then
you might have to go over the lists and reapply the lower level list format.

Thanks again!

Hello John and Stefan--

Thanks so much for this thread, this is the exact problem I'm having.
Simple 1,2,3, numbered lists in a document. In your very last post of
Nov. 17, you say:

Sorry for being a complete idiot but Word will do that to one after a
few days. Could you give me an absolutely clear step-by-step procedure
for this? I've been mucking around in what I think is the multi-level
list dialog for hours now, and I can't seem to make this work. Thanks.
