Resetting Word stlyes to original defaults

Mark Millard

Please help. I have changed Normal and some other styles, and now I just want
to revert all styles to square one and start over.

I can't find where to reset all styles to original defaults. No matter what
I try (deleting pref files, reinstalling Office 2004, etc.) my Normal style
still shows the font I changed it to.

What am I missing? How can I reset all styles in Word 2004?

The answer depends on where and how and what you changed, and what else
you are prepared to sacrifice to get back to square one.

Your styles are held in templates. If you have never actually created
and used a template, then they will be held in the default template,
called "Normal". Note that, even though "Normal" uses the same six
letters in the same order, it has nothing to do with the style called
"Normal". Except that is where Normal style hides if you have have not
given it another home.

The Normal template may be found in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/
It also holds stuff like your favourite autocorrect entries, so do the
next step with caution.
Quit Word, Rename Normal to something like "Old broken normal". Restart
Word.
That's it. If the cure is worse than the disease, quit Word, delete the
brand new Normal it just made all by itself, and restore the "Old
broken normal" to "Normal"

If you have a gazillion user templates already, then you will know that
this advice is not for you.

Defining your everyday styles and templates so they do not depend on
either the Normal template, or Normal style is highly recommended.

On the other hand, the style names Heading 1... Heading 9 are worth
keeping if you ever want a document to have a table of contents.

Styles are right at the heart of getting the best out of Word. It is
well worth spending a little effort on learning how.

is where to start.

You can just delete the Normal-template. There should be no havoc in any
case, cause it just resets the Word to factory-settings.

Before deleting the 'old' Normal you can retrieve stuff [such as custom
toolbars, Styles you may want to retain (some may have to be renamed if
they are modified versions of the originals), Macros & AutoText*] from
it into your new Normal using the Organizer.

*I believe this is what Elliott was referring to. As I understand it,
AutoCorrect items are stored in a separate ACL file rather than Normal.

....Except that you *lose* any customizations stored in the original
Normal as detailed in my reply to Mark. That can be a severe shock to
one's system if there is any amount that you rely on, & that
constitutes 'havoc' for me :)
