The answer depends on where and how and what you changed, and what else
you are prepared to sacrifice to get back to square one.
Your styles are held in templates. If you have never actually created
and used a template, then they will be held in the default template,
called "Normal". Note that, even though "Normal" uses the same six
letters in the same order, it has nothing to do with the style called
"Normal". Except that is where Normal style hides if you have have not
given it another home.
The Normal template may be found in ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/
It also holds stuff like your favourite autocorrect entries, so do the
next step with caution.
Quit Word, Rename Normal to something like "Old broken normal". Restart
Word.
That's it. If the cure is worse than the disease, quit Word, delete the
brand new Normal it just made all by itself, and restore the "Old
broken normal" to "Normal"
If you have a gazillion user templates already, then you will know that
this advice is not for you.
Defining your everyday styles and templates so they do not depend on
either the Normal template, or Normal style is highly recommended.
On the other hand, the style names Heading 1... Heading 9 are worth
keeping if you ever want a document to have a table of contents.
Styles are right at the heart of getting the best out of Word. It is
well worth spending a little effort on learning how.
