Resizing embedded excel object

S

Setter1

I am having problems resizing an embedded Excel spreadsheet in Word
2004 for mac.
The object was inserted w/ the paste special command.
What I am trying to do is to increase the amount of info viewed from
the spreadsheet, not just resize the "ole image". If I grab the handles
it only resizes the image, it doesn't expand the "window to excel". I
have tried cutting and pasting the new excel range while in the
edit-worksheet object mode, but it won't allow paste special. Any
idea's?

Hi Setter1,

Subject to Word's in-built limitations as to how many Excel rows/columns you
can display, you can vary the number displayed by opening the embedded
object (by double-clicking on it), then dragging the object handles.

Cheers

macropod,

I tried double-clicking, which opens excel. I then go back to word to
grab the handles, but I get the same result, it just changes the image
size, not the amount of info shown. I know that I was able to do this
on a PC without any problems. Any other ideas?

Thanks

Mac OS X & Windows OS implement OLE differently. You'll most likely have to
delete the existing object & replace it with a new one based on the actual
range of data to be displayed in the doc.

Hi Setter1,

Don't "go back to word to grab the handles" - grab them from *within* the
OLE object.

That's the problem - he *can't* :)

On Windows the embedded object opens in a frame in the doc & Word 'assumes
the identity' of Excel, so you can do what you suggest.

On the Mac the object actually opens as an Excel file *in* a separate Excel
application window, so the object frame doesn't exist. There's nothing you
can do in the Excel window to change the size of range that was originally
specified.

Thanks for that, Bob.

I don't suppose now's the time to suggest Setter1 get a Win PC ....

As an alternative to simply deleting the existing object & replacing it with
a new one, a better way might be to insert a new Excel object of the
required size, then cut & paste the contents of the old object to the new
one before deleting. That way, any formatting that needs to be kept doesn't
have to be recreated from scratch.

Wellllll... Once he double-clicks it he can use File>Save A Copy As to
create a new Excel file that contains any modifications that have been made
to the embedded object - which can't be done on the PC:) Then copy/paste
from that to create the new one. Six o' one / half dozen t'other :)
