resizing errors

when i try to resize a drawing by using the handles in the corners of a
sselected group, the proportions of each item in the group is not resized
equally in the x and y axis. this problem is particularly noticeable in
curved items within the group.

what can i do about this?

i tried that on my original drawing and on a test case i made using only the
90 degree arc tool.

i don't know if microsoft uses spline or bezier, but its very apparent that
the major error is at 45 degrees to the x and y axis.

this error is the same whether the shift key is held down during resize or
not.

if necessary i can attach small copies of my test pattern and the result i'm
getting from visio.

thanks for getting back with an answer doug, even if it was wrong :)

as a good test case, draw a large circle by drawing four 90 degree arcs.
group the arcs into a single item. the circle should be a large one.

grab any of the four corners and drag the handle at a 45 degree angle so the
dimensions in x and y remain proportional.

i've found that the circle doesn't remain circular the smaller i shrink the
circle.

my only recourse at this point is to try to use high magnification and
redraw all the arcs in my drawing using short straight line segments. this
isn't really acceptable from a product of the quality i've found in visio.

Following your test case and using the Drawing Tool Shapes it is nearly
impossible to get other circles than perfect ones due to the snap/glue
behavior of the 90 degree arcs. The only thing to be adjusted when extremely
shrinking will be the line thickness.

So I assume the problem affects objects like arcs and freeform lines in
general.

Three options:

a) select the objects you want to resize (without grouping!), then grab &
drag the outer corner

b) select the objects, then from the Shape menu select > Operations > Join;
now resize that single object by dragging (note: shapes will be converted to
simple lines / curves by that action)

c) further you can protect the aspect ratio of shapes and groups:
Right click the shape or group > Format > Protection > check "Aspect ratio"
This will make it much easier to resize objects by dragging.

You can also send me a VISIO sample file to have a look at.

frank? i tried to send you a test file illustrating my problem. did you get
them? or should i post them here? the file is about 300k visio file.

Hey all,

I had the same problem with resising arcs and curves as the original poster,
and while it may be too late for her, I thought I'd share my solution.

It seems, in Visio 2003 at least, that the "interaction style" for arcs and
freeform curves is set to 1-dimensional by default. I have no idea why, but
it can be changed by selecting all the arcs and curves you want to resize
(ungroup them all first.) Then, right click -> Format -> Behavior... and
change interaction style to "2-dimensional Box".

Everything should resize correctly now :)
