Resizing Images Issue

M

murman

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

(I again posted earlier in the General Office NG, so posting here - sorry. Here's the thread.)

Yes, I realized this was the general group - after I hit the send button - sorry.

Brand new - not an upgrade.

Only happening in files that were produced originally in Office 2007 (I think)

I opened a new PPT, and dragged all the slides into that one and it worked fine, however...

When I tried to apply a pre-existing .pot - 2008 got the spinning pizza wheel of death. I posted this issue to the correct group - Powerpoint help.

Thanks - Murray

Have you updated Office 2008 since installing it? Current update level is
12.1.5, so if you aren't at that level that's teh first thing that should be
done. Run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions as well - even if you've
already updated - then restart your Mac.

FWIW, I have a number of .pptx files definitely created in the 2007 version
& have experienced no such issue.

M

murman

Yes, updated upon install yesterday.

Repaired permissions and restarted - no change.

Templates are created in "Microsoft PowerPoint 97-2004 Template" - no change.

Should I uninstall and re-install?

Thanks - Murray

No, reinstalling on the Mac is never the appropriate direction to go. The
program files do not corrupt, so you aren't addressing the problem that way
& simply force yourself to have to go through all the updating again without
getting anything corrected The files that cause the problems don't get
replaced by reinstalling unless you do a proper "scorched earth" technique
which is reserved as a last resort :)

First, try running the program from a different user account to see if the
problem occurs there. Also, log out then hold Shift while logging in & see
if the problem remains. Post back with complete details of each process.

You said:

"> First, try running the program from a different user account to see if the

Did this, created a new user, created a new PPT, drew a rectangle, tried to resize and same thing . I also posted that applying an existing .pot crashes (need force quit - not responding). Same thing

MEANT TO SAY:> Did this, created a new user, OPENED AN EXISTING PPT CREATED IN PPT 97-2004, drew a rectangle, tried to resize and same thing . I also posted that applying an existing .pot crashes (need force quit - not responding). Same thing

I'm not convinced that reinstalling is the answer :)

Since the problem is only evident in certain files & there are no known
issues of the sort with the application you'd just be replacing apples with
apples. My take is that there is something about the files, themselves.

Can you send me a copy of one of the problem files? I'll have a look here &
see if I have the same problem. If so, perhaps I can isolate the cause. You
can just remove the "only" & the dot between com & cast from the spoofed
email address in the header of this post, but make sure to use the subject:

Bob:

Thanks for the offer, but I am viewing this group in Mozilla browser and can't find the "spoofed email" anywhere... What should i do? (sorry....)

OK, use generaltaz1ATcomcastdotnet. I forgot the web UI doesn't provide the
sender info unless they post through the site.

Well, the shape sizing issue was simpler than I thought :) I just didn't
recognize it from the description. Apparently the Default Tex Box Property
for shapes is set to Resize Shape to Fit Text. If you go to Format> Shape>
Text Box & choose the Do Not AutoFit option you should be fine. Then use the
Set As Default Shape command from the contextual menu if you wish.

As for the Template, I don't know what to tell you. I was able to open it
with no problem. I applied it to a New file as well as to several existing
files (both .ppt as well as .pptx) without so much as a hiccup, let alone a
crash. I resaved it with a name of Revised.pot & sent it back to you.
Perhaps the trip will have done it some good :) If not, post back with more
details about exactly how you're attempting to use it and anything more you
can offer. It certainly doesn't appear to be complex or contain anything
that would be responsible for shutting down the program.

Thank you so much for the follow up

The text box thing was fixed when I"Format> Shape>
Text Box & choose the Do Not AutoFit" that fixed it for the particular box that I drew, but if I want that to be the default, I didn't understand the "Then use the
Set As Default Shape command from the contextual menu if you wish." part. Would you clarify for my limited cranial capacity? I want to be able to draw shapes and not have them "autofit" without having to go in and choose that option each time.

The template you sent (Thanks!) does the same thing! I saved it to disk, opened a new 2008 PPT, applied and the spinning pizza wheel appears necessitating a force quit.

I have Office V.X still installed, could this be causing some conflict - I have dozens of pre-built templates like the one provided that I can't even use - very frustrating.

Thank you so much for your help!

Format a shape how you want the default set then Control/Right-Click it [to
produce the contextual menu] & choose Set As Default Shape.

Well, I figured the template issue out.

If I save one of the existing .pot files that were causing the crash as a PPT Template (.potX) I can then apply the template. If I save it as or try to apply a PPT Template 97-2004 it crashes.

I would really like to get to the bottom of this as I get a lot of 97-2004 templates, and I know you said there was no issue on your end. Any other suggestions?

One further question on this: If there is an option to draw either a Shape or a Text Box, why is it necessary for 2008 to require this workaround? Shouldn't one be able to draw a shape any size and resize it as in previous versions or draw a text box and have it Auto format to fit text? This definitely seems like a bug to me. Thanks for your input.

Certainly - And by default you *can* do exactly that. The point you're
missing is that whoever handle the file prior to you reset the default in
the manner I suggested you use to set it back again. IOW, there's no bug,
somebody changed the default properties.

Unfortunately I don't have the time to thoroughly investigate it, but my
guess would be that the file you're attempting to apply the template to has
already been saved as a .pptx *and* includes content/modifications which
aren't supported by the older template format. It just so happens that the
files I applied your template to were rather simple ones - in fact, they
both originally came from Windows PPt 2000-2003 & resaved as .pptx files.

You of course are absolutely right. I opened a new PPT and did not have the same issue. Thanks for the clarification.

Did you have a chance to see the post before this one you responded to re: the .pot files I was trying to apply and my "fix"?

Thanks for all of your help.
