Resource allocation within a subset

M

Michelle

I'm trying to level my project from a specific start date
based on work effort. This works fine at the same
category level, but different resources assigned to
independent tasks within a category look as if the second
task is dependent on the first. The 2nd task date does
not start until the first task is complete. There is no
predecessor. How can I get both tasks to start at the
same time, for instance?

Suggestions, please.

Thanks,
Michelle

Hi Michelle,

I would love to help you, but I need some more information.

1. The title of your post says "resource allocation" and your text speaks
about "leveling".
These are two totally different things. Leveling will eliminate
overallocations by postponing tasks, it does NOT allocate nor re-allocate
resources. Hence I need to know what exactly you want to achieve.
2. Just to make sure... you are not using Project Server are you?
3. What is a category in the context of leveling?
4. Why do you want to make the two tasks start simultaneously when that
causes an overallocation? If leveling postpones the second task that is
because simultaneity causes overallocation.

Hope this helps,

Hi Michelle,

I can see mlore clearly now, except for what exactly you mean by "I level by
work effort"
Is this Project's Resource Leveling or some routine of your own?
If it is Resource Leveling, it will do exactly as you want it to, it will
not move anything as long as there are no overallocations.

And I start wondering why your tasks do not happen the same day: they
should, if they don't YOU made them move either by constraints such as
setting a hard coded start date or by linking tasks to one another.

Try to find out how YOU moved the tasks (Project just obeys to the rules you
have set) and the problem is solved.

If you do not see what I mean, send me the file, I shall have a look.

HTH

Hello Jan,

We create a project plan where we set up resources, set up tasks, apply
the resources to the tasks, then level by work effort to determine the final
project end date.
I have multiple high level tasks and multiple tasks within each.
Forinstance, at the beginning of the project, where there are multiple
independent tasks assigned to different resources within a high level task,
I would like the tasks to start are the same day. There is no over
allocation because the resources are different.

Hi Jan,

We assign a number of hours to a task to which a resource will be
assigned. We assign a start date to the project. Then we level to
determine the project end date. I didn't do any set up other what I have
described above. I have created a sample project which displays my problem.
I would like to send it to you. I don't see how to do that through this
medium...help!!!

Hi all,

For the benefit of those who might have followed this thread, this is what I
wrote to Michelle after looking at her file:

Hi Michelle,

I now see exactly what you mean but...
What makes you say that before leveling there is no overallocation?
Put Leveling to Manual insted of automatic, then clear leveling and you will
see that MR is charged 12.8 hours and BT 10.8 hours.
Hence it is logical that when you do leveling, tasks get shifted.

If the problem is that you prefer to keep taks within a summary task
together (leveling as such ignores summary tasks) you have two options:

- Use ID Only as leveling priority (but that will always schedule tasks for
the first summary before tasks of teh second summary)
- Use priority, standard as the leveling priority, and give clearly
different priorities to tasks in different summary tasks

Hope this helps,
