Resource Assignment

Hi.

I tried to assign a resource to a summary task (just for testing if subtasks
are automatically assigned to this resource). Resources name appeared in the
Resource field in Gantt Chart view but subtasks were not affected. Can
anybody explain me why the resource is assigned to a summary task if
subtasks are not affected?

Thanks.
Emil.

You should never assign resources to summaries. You should only assign resources
to subtasks.

Some users end up doing both, and you would end up w/ funny duplicated math
as a result. The system will, of course, be happy to let you do it though.

Best practice would be to set up a filter to identify summary tasks w/ resources
assigned. Then audit your plans accordingly.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Emil,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

A summary summarises the subtask data underneath it. If you have resources
assigned to its tasks, the summary will show the effect of those
assignments. You should not assign resources to summaries as they are not
really tasks at all, and Project will not populate downwards if you do.
After all, how does Project know how to apportion the resources, and what
could it do if multiple resources were assigned? No, you are in control,
you must assign resources to individual tasks to meet your needs.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi,

Apart from teh fact that you shouldn't, this is what happens.
The resource is used by the summary task for the duration of the summary
task, just like for any other task.

Thanks a lot! Yeah, I'm not going to assign resources to a summary task. I
just wanted to test it.

Thanks, guys, for help!
Emil.
