Resource Assignments: Sorting by task-ID

Our team leads quite reasonably want the Web Access (2007, SP1 +
infrastructure update) views on the resource centre to look the same as the
equivalent views on MS Project so when talking about stuff over a phone etc
they can look at the same data depending on whether they are using project or
the server. This is mostly an issue of ordering. We want the order to be the
same in both views, and for them to be sorted by task-ID.

So, I add task-ID into the view and sort on this to make it look the same as
project professional when a single resource is selected. However, this causes
a blank view to be returned. Just having the task-ID in the view causes this
:-(

So, thinking I could work around this easily enough, I generated a custom
field which is a copy of the task-ID and add that to the view. That works
fine, except that summary tasks have the wrong number. I assume that is
because the resource assignment view is of assignments and a summary task
doesn't have any assignments and thus doesn't pick up the custom field value
associated with the task?

Is there a solution to this, either my controlling the number that appears
against the summary tasks or something more obvious?

Thanks (again) for any help,
Stevio

I have found the source of the issue, but don't know how to solve it :-(

Despite the custom field being setup to not calculate anything for summary
fields, the web view seems to be defaulting to calcluating a value for
summary rows equal to the sum of the sub task ID's. In doing so, it
overwrites the correct values in the summary tasks which then prevent the
sort from working correctly.

I tried changing the custom field to use the minimum value as a formula but
that then caused the VBA that writes the values in project project (on save)
to crash.

If I could set it to the minimum of the subtasks (or get it to not do any
calculation at all) then the sort would work and I'd have a solution...

Stevio,

You are on the right track. Use the "outline number" field. It will leave
the value blank for summary tasks and allow you to sort the detailed task
assignments correctly.
