Resource leveling - a simple experiment

C

Clive Long,UK

I find that using leveling on a large project turns up a large number
of tasks that cannot be levelled and I end up with over-allocations

Now this may be a bug in this feature.

However, I have found with smaller projects that if:

I use priority, standard

Think about the priority of tasks and set them

Have all tasks to complete "AS soon as possible" i.e. DO NOT Constrain
them to MUST START on a specific date

And you "uncheck" all the items in "RESOLVING OVERALLOCATIONS" part of
the dialog

Then leveling seems to work

.... seems sensible really

.... but when did THAT count for anything ..... ???

Especially imprtant is not to use the "must start on", must finish on" or
must start or finish no later than constraints. Leveling by delaying tasks.
Those contraints say the task musn't be delayed. Therfore leveling can't do
it's job.

Hi Clive,

I have seen leveling on thousands of assignments, and I can assure you that
you can check on the second and third option in the leveling dialog and get
good results.
Of course, the first one tells leveling to respect the project end date as
it stands, so it will often abandon ship...
