Resource Levelling should increase duration

C

Chris PB

This is a simplified version of my problem:

I have 3 tasks that all take 8 hours and Joe Bloggs and they all start on
the same day (25th October).

Resource Levelling moves tasks 2 & 3 to the 26th and 27th October
respectively.

I want MSP to automatically increase the duration of each task to 3 days and
reduce the resource units to 33% (i.e. have concurrency of tasks).

Sorry, but that's not what leveling does. All it EVER does is delay work,
either for individual resources or as a group. But under no circumstances
will it ever adjust the assignment levels of those resources to the tasks.
That sort of optimization is always a manual process.

Hi Chris,

MS Project cannot do this.
Leveling never ever changes assignment units,

Fortunately, great project management guru Goldratt will tell you that the
way MS project works (let people finish what they start) is by far the more
productive way.

Thanks Jan..however I don't think I explained the problem well enough so here
goes..

One of my 'resources' is a test facility where only one person can use it at
any time to a maximum of 5 days per week:

Person A must have it for 2 days per week over a period of 10 weeks
Person B must have it for 1 day per week over a period of 8 weeks
Person C wants it for 100 days to complete asap

It is not practical to do A then B then C so I must schedule them in parallel.

I want MSP to calculate the total elapsed time of the Person C task. i.e. I
can schedule in Person C for 2 days per week for 10 weeks (total = 20 days)
PLUS 3 days per week for 2 further weeks (total = 6 days) PLUS the remainder
at 5 days per week (total = 76 days or 15 weeks and 1 day). Therefore the
total elapsed time of the task is 25 weeks and 1 day.

Resource leveling simply does not do that sort of thing. You'll need to
make those adjustments by hand using the timescaled data in the usage views.

Hi Chris,

But A and B can interrupt C (same end result) and that Project's leveling
can do.
