Resource only available % of time

I've created a resource that's available only 50% of their
time. They estimate it will take 16 hours to do the
task. I enter duration as 2 days expecting it to carry
over 4 calendar days but MS keeps it on 2 days. How can I
make this do what I need it to do? Thanks for any help.

Hi Angela

if you edit the resource's calendar so that they are working 1/2 the time
(ie 8 - 12) and leave their availability at 100% when you assign them to a
task Project will react the way you are wanting. Note however the duration
column won't change to 4 days, but the gantt chart will show the work over 4
days.

When you change a resource's availability to 50% you're saying to Project
that you only want them to work on a 2d task at 50% effort - ie only do 1
day's work over the 2 days.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, I still can't get it
to work. I've created a Test resouce, let it at 100%,
changed the calendar to only be 8-12. I created a Task,
set the Work hours to 16 (so it will take Test 4 days to
complete the task), entered Test as my resouce and now the
Resource column shows Test[200%] and the Start/Finish
dates cover two days. So, I'm still stuck!

Hi Angela

don't set the work - set the duration to 2 days (as this is against the
standard calendar's definition of a day it should give you the outcome
you're looking for).

As Julie mentioned but you may have missed, the elapsed time of the task
will be 4 days but the duration column will show 2 days. The is because a
standard "project duration day" (defined in the Tools, Options, Calendar
page) is 8 hours. A "day" is an 8 hour time interval, not 24 hours or a
sunrise/sunset. A task starting Monday at 8 and running continuously to
finish Tuesday at 8 is a 3 day task, not a 1 day task. A full-time resource
will work one shift if he works a "day." But a part-time resource who works
4 hours per day will have to work *2* work shifts to complete the same 1
day's work. So if the task begins, say, Monday at 8, a 2 day task for Bill
Full-time will end Tuesday at 5 but for Susie Part-time the same *2 day*
task ends Thursday at noon. The task is a two "standard project duration"
day task in both cases and so 2 days is what displays in the duration column
whether it's Bill or Susie assigned to it.
