Resource Overallocation

R

Robert

A project has 7,000 lines, 350 resources. Typically multiple resources
assigned to each task and all assignments may not be concurrent.
When in Resource Usage view, removing overallocations, I occasionally have
situations that indicate an overallocation (as red). On the right side, Work
will equal Availability (in red), Remaining Availability will equal zero (in
red), and Remaining Availability will equal zero, also in red, which causes
the entire resource to show as overallocated.

My problem is, the resource has NO ASSIGNMENTS for the periods which are
problems.

Any suggestions to clear the "overallocation"? Or how to identify the cause?

TIA

Hi Robert,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

You say that Work equals availability. If it shows Work, then the resource
must have been assigned. Try removing the assignment and re-instating it.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, the problem is that this occurs
when there is NO ASSIGNMENT to remove.

I also have a similar problem, where, if I change (decrease) the scheduled
Work for a one or more activities for a particular resource for a particular
day, there may be no change to Work at the summary level for that resource,
until I happen to change some work number and then all accumulated changes
seem to be implemented. There is no visual indication in the Usae grid that
the last number changed was any different than any of the other numbers.

It's not a slow CPU or memory issue and I don't think it's a system
resources issue. I'm using MSP 2003 Pro w/SP2 on a stand alone machine.

thanks
Robert

Hi Robert,

I've just got back from holiday - are you still in trouble?

Hi Mike,

Yes, it seems to be a re-occurring problem.

Hope you enjoyed your vacation.

thanx,

Hi Robert,

I'm no further forward in my thinking :( Where do you get the Availability
figure from, as that is not a field offered for the cells on the right-hand
side under Detail Styles...? I can't understand how you can have Work
figures when the resource is not assigned to work. What happens of you zero
the hours in the Work cells?

It may be that you're using the Pro version and I'm using the Standard
version.

If you could send me a bit of the project where the fault lies, I could have
a closer look.
