Resource placeholders

I am working with MS Project 2003. I am developing a template for my
organization which will utilize a resource pool. I would like to set up the
template with predefined "Roles" and effort for each task. Is there a way to
define a "Role" so that when the resources are defined for the project a
resource can be filled in for the Role? I am looking for a more elegant
solution than adding dummy resources. I would like to maintain the role that
the resource is playing on the project.

Dummy resources are your only option I'm afraid, even with Project Server.

Make sure you don't link templates to resource pools as that's a sure fired
way to corrupt resource workloads and create file corruptions by messing
with links when the template is saved with a new name.
