Resource Pool instability issues

Has anyone else dealt with serious Resource Pool instability issues?
I've been working on some recently, and have tried all kinds of things
to get rid of them. I'm also trying to figure out what causes them in
the first place.
I've reconstructe the RP twice. The first time, I removed all 70
projects, deleted the old RP, then linked all the projects to a new RP
file. When the instability problems returned, I saved all the files in
Access (having heard on here that this can "cleanse" the files), then
brought them back and created a new RP from the cleaned up files. Now
we're having major instability problems again, like not being able to
open or close the RP sometimes. I've also created master projects from
the RP (the third choice when you open the RP) to try to stabilize it.
This seems to help for a while, but has not been a true long-term fix.
Anyone else been here, done this, can offer suggestions? BTW, my
client is migrating to Project Server next month which will, I'm told,
help immensely. Any comments on this?

Hi Dave,

Yes I have encountered problems like these.
When you say "I linked all the projects to a new RP" did this new RP also
have a new name?
A bit longish to explain my theory aboiut it, but that is an absolute
prerequisite for success in this.
If it had a new name, I can only pray..

Jan,
Yes, it had a new name. Am curious about your theory as I've had
issues with renaming files in Project.

Hi,

Links to a resource pool seem to be in terms of UniqueID
When you deconnect a file from a pool then reconnect it to a pool with the
same name the sharerfile does not look up the IDs in the new pool instead
keeps working with th old uniqueIDs thsu messing the whole thing up.
(Diagnostic from a very frustrating experience)

Thanks for your comments, Jan. Haven't run across that one myself, so
it's good to know.
Does anyone else have experience with Resource Pool instability? And
ideas on what causes it and what fixes it?
Do things like schedule conflicts, resources assigned outsidd of dates
contribute? What about broken linkds between projects?
Anybody? Anybody? Buhler? Buhler? (Ferris Buhler's Day Off)

Hi David,

I'm having somewhat similar problems. On my new assignment, I started to do
"housecleaning" in regards to all the schedules and resource pools (yes...
multiple pools: one with labor rates and one without). I also had the issue
with bloated file sizes and corrected most of the files by using the
recommended method from this group.

I'm having issues with resources changing when the resource pool opens,
which is a big headache and causes my peers to lose confidence in the
schedules. I know it's a matter of correcting the resource pool issues.

Does anyone know if there is anything written up on Resource Pools and
strategies on how to use them?

Thanks!

Ian Coletti, PMP
