Resource usage view - Work vs duration

On the resource usage view, there are two columns that default in: Resource
name and work. The issue is that the hours in the Work column is really the
Duration hours. I need the work hours as that is what my costs are calculated
off of. Is there an update to MSProject to make that column truly be the Work
hours? Is there another view/report you suggest to be able to break my cost
totals down by resource?

I don't undestand where your misunderstanding comes from but Work is really
Work, where costs are calculated from.
