Resource Usage View

I have a question about the Resource Usage view. When I construct a schedule
the milestones in the schedule all have a zero duration and I normally do not
assign a resource. This results in all the Milestones appearing in the
Resource Usage view as Unassigned tasks. How can I filter these tasks from a
resource view? This isn't that big of a problem but it creates a lot of
clutter when trying to make sure I have made assignments to all my tasks.

Saratoga,
You have a couple of options. If zero duration milestones are the only
tasks without an assignment, you could filter on the Work field,
filtering out anything with "0" hours. However, that quick solution may
not work in every case.

If you were using a task view, it of course would be a simple matter of
filtering on the Milestone field, but since you are using a combination
view, the Milestone field does not exist for resources or assignments.
For reference I refer you to our MVP website at:
http://www.mvps.org/project/faqs.htm
Take a look at FAQ 51 - Data Types: Task, Resource and Assignment

Given a combination view you could copy the contents of the task
Milestone field into a spare flag field for assignments and then filter
on that in the Resource Usage view. See FAQ 37 - Custom Fields in Tables
for information on a quick way to do that.

Hope this helps.

Hi Saratoga,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

The simplest way is to contract the Unassigned by clicking the minus sign
next to it.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Thanks for you help on this problem but both of the solution have a problem.
what I am trying to do is identify the tasks I need to assign resources to
but since I do not need to assign resources to a milestone I wish to filter
them our. The problem with John's solution is the field work will have a
value of zero until a resource is assigned. the problem with Mikes solution
is it hides the list I am trying to work with.

Any other suggestions?

John, I like your second option but with one enhancement. If I combine the
test for Milestone = no with Work = 0 I get the results I am looking for
which is a list of unassigned tasks that are not Milestones.

Thanks again, both of you for your time on this.

Saratoga,
You're welcome. Yes, the second approach is the more robust.

Saratoga:

Milestones have 0 duration value. Unassigned tasks have a default estimated
duration value of 1. Even if you've manipulated duration values, provided
that you aren't assigning durations to your milestones, filtering on
duration should do the trick.
