Resources and assignments don't publish

D

Denis in Brisbane

I have an environment with Project Server SP1 on one box and SQL SP3a on a
second. I have 2 pairs of databases - one training and one production.

It has been working but just recently I have found in training that
publishing a new project shows it in Project Center but not in Project views.

Today I found in production that the last few resources defined in the
Enterprise Resource Pool are not visible in resource center and changes to
resources don't appear. They are in the resource pool and appear when I build
team from enterprise.

I also have a similar problem to the one in the training environment that
publishing assignments did not result in them appearing in Project views such
as resource assignments or resource summary. They do appear in timesheets.

I have captured a log file (relating to the second problem) which seems to
indicate problems with Views. The first few entries are shown below.

The system doesn't feel well.
Any help most welcome.

Denis:

You appear to be bitten by the special characters issue. You must not use
dashes in project names. Remove any project with a name that contains
anything but letters, numbers and underscores. All other characters can
cause these problems. The same applies to Resources. First, let's clear up
the obvious and let us know if things return to normal. Otherwise, follow-up
and we'll keep trying.

Thanks, Gary.

That's going to be a real pain as they have a number of project names with
hyphens in.
Is the Project Rename utility reliable? I couldn't get it to work last time
I tried.

The site has been working fine. Why would it suddenly go off the rails if
the project names were a problem?

Denis:

Yes, the tool works but it's not perfect. The answer to the second question
is likely something like you finally hit the right combination of bad
characters to start the corruption chain of events.
