Resources Calculations

Hi

I'm trying to use ms project to calculate exactly how many resources
need to complete a given task by a set deadline. I currently do not hav
enough resources, but I know how much work there is to be done and whe
it needs to be done by, but I can't seem to find anyway of Projec
showing me exactly how many extra resources I actually need to hire i
order to meet the deadline. All it seems to offer is the option o
moving the deadline or decreasing the work. I can see that this is
kind of backwards calculation to the way that Project normally works
but cannot believe that it doesn't have the functionally to do it. Am
missing something very obvious?

Cheers

Hi Coleyparka ,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Try resource graph, select your resource and the default view shows the Peak
Units by time period. If you zoom or scroll you can find the maximum you
need and on which dates.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure I made myself as clear as I coul
have in my initial post. My situation is as follows:

I have a task that with a single resource working a standard week wil
take 165 weeks to complete. I need this to take 35 weeks maximum as
have a set deadline. Is there a way within project that I can kee
adding extra resources to the task so that the task bar keeps shrinkin
until such time as the deadline is met and I then have a view of ho
many resources it will take to meet this deadline? I could do this quit
easily on a calculator by dividing the amount of hours of work require
by the amount of work each resource can do in a standard week, but
have to apply this approach to a vast number of tasks, so would find i
much easier if there were a simple way to do this in Project itself.

Many thanks for your help - much appreciated.

Hi,

Indeed, I'm not even sure yoru questoion is completely clear right now..
If you think task by task, you are requesting standard Project behaviour.
You can even set the ask to fixed work type, then enter the new duration, and
Project spells out the number of resources for you (Units, can be set to
decimals in Tools, Options, Schedule)

Alas! If you want to reduce all tasks simultaneously (or according to an
other logic) you will need some more logic like VBA.

Hope this helps,

If you set the task type to fixed work, enter the work and one resource and
then set the duration to the 35 weeks deadline project will calculate the
units. In your example if you enter 6600hrs of work and 1 resource and then
set the duration to 35 weeks project will calculate 471% units telling you
you need 4.7 resources to complete the task in 35 weeks.
