Resources drop when using office xp over network

Frustrated PC Tech

Brief overview: I'm a tech for a PC repair/reseller, we
provided systems to a custommer a long time ago.

Custommer has small network with Windows ME on problem
system (PC1) and Office XP, data is stored on "server"
also with Windows ME and Office XP, both 900mhz
processors, server has 512MB RAM, PC1 has 256MB, both
fully updated windows and office, other PC on network is
higher spec, running xp-pro with office xp, plus other
digital photo apps, which is it's main use, no problems
with office on that one.

Running office (word/excel) locally on "PC1" works fine,
resources ok, can browse network and use shared internet,
no problems.
When a document from the "server" is opened on "PC1"
resources start dropping - not evey time, but significant
majority, free memory is ok (installed memory manager as
first solution to problem - didn't help) User and System
resources are hitting 0 (GDI is usually ok), freezing the
system, then slowly climbing back up a way, then droppng
back down again. Even after closing the office app, the
problem remains for some time.

Hardware tested ok (RAM, CPU etc.) the problem has been
narrowed down to office.

Found nothing that solved problem in knowledgebase, and
since software is oem, we're looking at more costs the
custommer is trying to avoid if we go to M$ Support.

Any help/advice much appreciated.
