Resourcing question

James Martin

Hi

I am trying to get my thinking straight on the way resources are allocated.
As far as I can tell it is possible for a project manager to assign any
resource to his project providing that they are also a resource manager. Is
it possible to restrict the resources that a resource manager has access to
i.e. the Service Manager can only assign tasks to service staff?

Thanks

James

Hi,

Not that I am aware of. For many projects this would be very
counter-productive. In a matrix organization, running a typical project,
that cuts across several departments/business units/divisions the project
will require resources from many areas.

Hi Rod,

Thank you for a swift reply. From what I have read Project 2003 does imply
that you can do this and apply some sort of security model (category perhaps
?) to restrict which resources a person would see in the Build team from
enterprise dialog. I may be wrong - its just the impresion I got reading a
couple of articles on Project 2003.

Thanks

James

James,

This is part of what the Resource Breakdown Structure is
designed to do. By creating a RBS, Project knows exactly
who reports to who. Then you can set the Category to
allow PMs to only see the resources that report to them.
