You can have Word restart captions after a specific heading
level. Note that this assumes that you are using at least one of
Word's built-in heading styles (these are named Heading 1 through
Heading 9) in your document. In Word 97 and Word 2000, simply
select Insert>Caption (in Word 2002 and later I believe it's
Insert>Reference>Caption), and select the relevant Label, that
is, if you are changing Figure numbering, select Figure in the
Label box. Click the Numbering button, check the option to
"Include chapter number", and select the appropriate heading
style. Click OK, and then click Cancel.
Alternatively, consider the fact that Word's caption feature
makes use of SEQ fields, whose field codes can be displayed and
modified as needed. In order to restart numbering for a SEQ
numbering sequence, you simply add the \r switch and the number
to restart at.
For example, you can display the field codes for a sequence of
figures in Word by pressing ALT+F9; you'll see something like the
following:
{ SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \* MERGEFORMAT }
{ SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \* MERGEFORMAT }
{ SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \* MERGEFORMAT }
{ SEQ Figure \* ARABIC \* MERGEFORMAT }
Modify the second field code so that it says:
{ SEQ Figure \r 1 \* ARABIC \* MERGEFORMAT }
and then select the fields, press F9 to update their display, and
press ALT+F9 to hide field codes. What you see is the following
sequence:
1
1
2
3
