Restart Numbered Lists Each Time

I'm using Word v.X on a Mac (OS 10.3.9). I have a style defined
("DescriptionABC") that creates a numbered list of paragraphs. Every
time I apply it it continues the list from the previous section that
also had the style. Each time I go in and "restart numbering" from the
bullets and numbering menu item.

This is really quite annoying.

There is never a time when I would want a list to continue from one
place to the next. Is there anyway to turn this off permanently? I'm
talking about a 200+ page document.

Anybody have any ideas? It just gets worse and worse.

I have two documents, both with lists that I have manually gone in and
"restarted." I combine the documents. Suddenly they are all messed up
again. Really annoying.

Any way to say every occurrence of an ordered list will start with "a"
(or 1) and continue on to the end of that ordered list?

there is no way for this in a default setting.
I think because it's technical very difficult. Within a list you want
to continue the numbering. After having a little sub numbering, you
want the top numbering again continued.
1. good idea
2. bad idea, because
a. it's not mine
b. it's silly
3. best idea of all

After a while you will start a new list numbering. you expect this to
start at 1. Isn't it?

This weekend i will do some tests about this.
Maybe you can take a look at the following:
The best way of using list numbering is define a style (you did), edit
this style and choose a one of the existing number format from the
galery. You may change the format, but the one you have chosen must be
almost the perfect one.
