Restart of number stream crashes Word

Greetings,
I hope following description in english language is clear for you. I use
the german Word version, so I'm not sure wether I write the correct
english terminology of word functions.

I use Word 2003. I've created a paragraph style "Number" and a list
style "num". I connected "Number" with the first level of "num".
At several places in my document I want to restart the numbering of the
paragraph "Number" with "1". So I click on the paragraph, right mouse
button, and choose "Restart numbering" in the popup menu.
It works fine once or twice (or less ...) but then Word crashes. But, -
when I restart the software, the number IS restarted.

So my "workaround" now is: I do the number restart, let Word crash down,
restart the software and work on until the next crash. Not very
sophisticated.

My document are very small, only text, no tables, 2-4 pages.

Any ideas?

But as long as you are crashing, keep sending error reports to MS.
Eventually they'll find and fix whatever it is that causes the crash. Also,
if you've had a lot of crashes, you probably have a bit of housekeeping to
